Choosing the correct court or tribunal is an important first step when dealing with a legal dispute. Civil disputes may relate to property, recovery of money, agreements, injunctions, or other civil rights. Depending on the circumstances, these matters may be presented before the appropriate civil court or another forum having jurisdiction.

For financial disputes, specialized forums such as the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) may be relevant in cases covered by its jurisdiction. Similarly, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) deals with specified matters concerning companies, insolvency, corporate disputes, and related proceedings under applicable laws.

Criminal matters follow a different process because they concern alleged offences and can involve investigation, prosecution, trial, and other proceedings. Consumer cases, meanwhile, allow eligible consumers to seek remedies for defective products, deficient services, or unfair practices through the consumer dispute redressal mechanism.

Family Court proceedings address sensitive issues such as divorce, maintenance, custody, and other family disputes. Since every case has different facts and legal requirements, obtaining appropriate legal advice and identifying the correct forum can help avoid unnecessary delays and procedural difficulties.
